2009-2010 GOALS AND OBJECTIVES
Board goals and objectives and student performance data inform the development of customized school, department and individual annual growth plans.
Goal 1. To increase individual and group student achievement as measured by multiple and varied assessments.
2009-2010 Objectives
- In order to progress toward the long term goal of all students graduating from NCHS proficient in a second language:
- Phase I of FLES (grades K-2) will be implemented and student performance data will be maintained as part of a longitudinal performance data base.
- Proficiency expectations tied to national standards will be established and baseline assessment data will be recorded and analyzed by teachers as part of program assessment and development.
- Curriculum, instructional resources, professional development and staffing will be in place to allow for FLES Phase 2 (grades 3-4) implementation, scheduled for 2010-2011.
- Through the use of district programs and technology, World Language will develop opportunities to expand and extend K-12 WL study.
- The district will develop a plan that will allow middle school students who have participated in the FLES program to enroll in a second language.
- Students will demonstrate proficiency in 21st century Information, Communication and Technology competencies at the elementary, middle and high school levels.
- Data resulting from performance tasks for grades 4, 7, 9 will be used to further refine ICT standards and to develop direct and integrated instructional delivery models.
- A Grade 11 integrated performance task will be piloted and performance data will be used to inform the ICT program and instruction aligned with graduation expectations.
- The department will gather and analyze feedback from recent graduates to assess the relevance and effectiveness of current program in relationship to the ICT demands they face in post secondary environments.
- Students of the Visual and Performing Arts will use rubrics and electronic portfolios to document and reflect on their achievement and growth as they move through the K-12 Arts program:
- Data will be collected for a second year and analyzed to determine the impact of portfolios on student performance and self assessment skills.
- 90% of students will meet or exceed state standards as measured by annual Connecticut tests.
- Individual students and student groups will evidence continuous progress as measured by a variety of district assessments.
- All students will meet or exceed NCHS graduation standards.
Goal 2. To improve achievement, service, and relationships through communication that is responsive, clear, timely and inclusive.
2009-2010 Objectives
- Review current NCHS career and college planning services, communications and reporting systems in relation to student needs and current guidance standards and best practices.
- Gather feedback from the community to identify effective methods of communication in order to develop improvements to current systems.
- Continue to refine communication efforts, outside of the budget process, with town officials regarding the needs of the school district.
- The Board of Education will review the efficacy of televised meetings.
Goal 3. To promote exemplary research-based practices among all faculty and staff in the service of student learning.
2009-2010 Objectives
- Teachers and administrators will collaboratively study, develop, and share effective instructional practices that lead to continuous student growth toward high standards.
- Teachers and administrators will regularly analyze formative and summative performance data to inform instructional planning and to assess the impact of instruction on learning.
- 3. As part of professional growth and development, the district will implement a system for gathering and analyzing information about the extent to which:
- Teachers and administrators demonstrate an understanding of responsive teaching principles and practices.
- Teachers and administrators integrate district ICT learning standards and skills into classroom instruction and professional work.
- The district will use research and data analysis to examine trends and plan future development.
Goal 4. To promote an environment that fosters respect, ethical behavior and responsible citizenship.
2009-2010 Objectives
- Consistent with Response to Intervention, a K-12 curriculum framework for social emotional learning and wellness will be developed.
- All members of the school community will demonstrate self respect, respect for others and an active commitment to ethical and responsible behavior.
- All members of the school community will consistently exhibit a respect for diversity and the skills needed to participate in and contribute to diverse communities.
Goal 5: To maintain the effective stewardship of district resources and physical assets in a manner that supports safe and healthy environments and optimizes student learning.
2009-2010 Objectives
- Develop and document a district approach to energy efficiency and recycling resources.
- Develop a wellness policy addressing nutrition and physical activity as major components.
- Prioritize and review Board of Education policies that require updating or development.
- Develop and present the 2010-2011 budget with clarity and transparency.
